With the holidays behind us and market season right around the corner, it’s time to get up to speed on the latest trends for 2018. At the close of 2017, Pinterest put together a report on trends to look out for this year based on the top searches on the site. Here are the 10 home trends you should keep an eye out for, along with some insight from Editorial Director of The Trend Curve Michelle Lamb.

1. Wall art

Perhaps signaling a move away from minimalism and toward more eclectic, personalized styles, wall art is here to stay. Saves for “wall art” were up 637 percent.

2. Patterned plants

Plants in general are a popular choice to liven up spaces these days, but patterned plants are spicing it up even more with mixed colors and bold patterns. Saves for “patterned plants” were up 533 percent.

3. Mixed metallics

Mixing metallics offers the chance to add some luxury to a space in unexpected ways. Lamb says given their prominence over the last two years and the high volume of searches for mixed metals on Pinterest, the trend is likely ready for a drop-off soon. She said she views mixed metals as more mainstream rather than a trend at this point. Saves for “mixed metals” were up 423 percent.

4. Terrazzo

Terrazzo has plenty of room to grow, Lamb says. The funky tiling popularized in the 70’s is back and ready for application on floors, walls, countertops and backsplashes. Saves for “terrazzo” were up 316 percent.

5. Statement ceilings

Wallpapers, texturing and bold colors on a ceiling can bring an added layer of character to a room. Lamb says statement ceilings will be on the rise, adding that ceilings “have not been a focal point of decor for a couple of decades (think tin-look ceilings seen during the 1980s revival of Victorian style).” Saves for “statement ceilings” were up 310 percent.

6. Resort style

Rattan furniture and spa-inspired bathrooms are bringing beach vibes from the resort to the home. Lamb says rattan has been building for over a year, so it’s definitely ready for prime time. Saves for “spa bathrooms” were up 269 percent.

7. Bone inlay

Intricate bone inlay provides an ornate, one-of-a-kind look to furnishings pieces from tables to chests. Saves for “bone inlay” were up 207 percent.

8. Sage

Lamb says yes to sage. The earthy tone brings a calming, nature-inspired aesthetic that pairs well with metallics. Saves for “sage” were up 170 percent.

9. Herringbone pattern

Herringbone patterns on wood flooring, carpeting or backsplashes offer a subtle geometric look to modernize a space. Saves for “herringbone patterns” were up 131 percent.

10. Statement doors

Homeowners are opting for bolder statements on the exteriors of their homes with the addition of colorfully painted front doors. Saves for “colorful doors” were up 121 percent.
