Handley floor lamp with three black iron rod as a base with ivory shade

Long gone (and thankfully so) are the days when the single-minded pursuit of maintaining “the perfect home” rested squarely on the flawlessly dressed shoulders of the lady of the house. But while our 21st-century lives look very different from those of our mothers and grandmothers in the 1950s and 60s, between work and shuttling kids and activities and travel, modern interiors at home still promise solace we’re hard-pressed to find anywhere else. The peace and serenity brought on by clean lines, a neutral palette, natural woods, leather and brass is palpable. And together, these features feel less like a trend and more like a movement that’s here to stay.

Modern floor lamps certainly aren’t going anywhere. Strong, sophisticated and decked out in the hot again finish for 2018 (three cheers for brass!), the statement-making portables are a perfect way to give a living, dining or bedroom beautifully buttoned-up style that’s rooted in the past but ready to drive us into a calmer, more serene future.

Read on for a look at some of our favorites for the floor.

Doppler floor lamp with satin glass globes and a brass finish from Adesso HomeDoppler — Adesso

Nothing says Mid-Century design like the Sputnik chandelier or Stilnovo’s satin glass globes. Inspired by those modern mainstays, Adesso puts its own spin on Space Age style.

The company’s Doppler LED tree lamp features five white opal glass globe shades positioned along a sleek brass pole. Far from being stuck in the past, the portable comes with five G9 LED bulbs that give off 1,000 lumens of ambient light. Pairs well with: a leggy standing planter and statement wall art.

Palo floor lamp with a brass base and a linen drum shade from Sonneman — A Way of LightPalo — Sonneman - A Way of Light

The seamless integration of form and function is at the heart of every modern design, and the Palo floor lamp from Sonneman delivers the goods. The look, shown here in Satin Brass, is tailored, clean and easily adjustable thanks to a dual stem design.

The base stays firmly rooted, while the moveable pole brings the linen drum shade to a height that’s just right. Pairs well with: a jewel-tone velvet sofa and an antique rug.

Drayton floor lamp with a black base and brass accents and shade from Currey & Co.Drayton — Currey & Co.

AMC’s Mad Men TV series may be over, but nearly three years later, we’re still swooning over the star of the show…Mid-Century Modern decor. We imagine that when designing its Drayton floor lamp, Currey & Co. asked WWDDD (What would Don Draper Do?) before it landed on the tall and lean silhouette with a brass and black iron finish.

Though the overall aesthetic has all the trappings of a really great throwback, the style still feels fresh and new. Pairs well with: a Mid-Century credenza and a cocktail set.

Handley floor lamp with three black iron rod as a base with ivory shadeHadley — Arteriors

You Hadley at tripod. This iron floor lamp from Arteriors features three black rods that form one of the most classic constructions of Modern design. In this case, all rods point to home, an antique brass ball topped with an ivory shade.

A new take on a Mid-Century standard, the Hadley can also easily hold its own in contemporary interiors. Pairs well with: a stark black and white backdrop in need of some warmth.
